They produce a wide variety of machinery parts, including digger buckets, shear grabs, forks, and more, designed to suit a range of agricultural and construction applications.
The objective was to create a cylinder that could slow down the motion of the shear grabs during both extension and retraction. The purpose of this was to reduce the stress and impact on the mounting pins, ultimately enhancing the overall customer experience during machinery operation.
While standard cushioning packages exist in the hydraulic cylinder industry, the specific requirements for the shear grab application—such as mounting location, cylinder size, and flow rate – meant that these standard solutions were unsuitable. NHL was tasked with developing a bespoke cushioning solution to meet these precise needs.
The process included:
NHL’s standard testing procedures were applied to ensure the design would meet both performance and safety requirements.
The cylinders underwent 25,000 cycles of testing to assess operational conditions and durability.
The cylinders were tested on a similar machine to observe the performance in an operational environment.
After evaluating the results of these tests, NHL identified the best solution for the cushioning cylinder and presented it to Eastern Attachments.
The solution was well-received, and Eastern Attachments were highly satisfied with the results. As a result, they have since purchased over 2,000 of these custom cushioning cylinders in a two-year period.
